Explore Your New City: Six Helpful Websites

Posted by on Jul 27 | 2015

Back home, you had favourite restaurants, bars, cafes, and gyms—places where you were a regular, where you felt part of the town. A difficult part of relocating is finding that sense of community you likely had at your last home. Sometimes you need help finding new places, and finding a new social group. Fortunately there are several websites dedicated to helping you explore your new city, and helping you feel at home, in your new home.

Websites To Help You Explore Your New City

  1. Yelp
  2. Yelp covers everything you need to know: location, hours, price point, as well as the invaluable bonus of having user reviews. It’s the cyber equivalent of word-of-mouth, great for everything from finding an elegant restaurant to celebrating an anniversary, to finding that perfect haircut.

  3. Time Out
  4. From Brisbane to Bangalore, Hyderabad to Houston, Time Out has the word on culture. Time Out provides extensive city guides on film, theatre, music, drinking, and dining. They also include curated best-of lists, if you need a little help deciding where to go or what to do.

  5. Urban Spoon
  6. Urbanspoon is a simple, restaurant-only site. Similar to Yelp, they operate on user reviews. They also compile lists so you can easily narrow down your choices, whether you’re feeling like something high end, or cheap eats. Urbanspoon is an easy to navigate, no-frills restaurant guide.

  7. LUXE City Guides
  8. LUXE doesn’t have as many destinations as some of the other sites listed (they focus more on the Asias and Europe rather than North America), but what they lack there they make up for in style.

The website is beautifully designed, the recommendations, be they for shopping, restaurants, or spas, are all written with flair, and by locals. As they say, “It’s like having a friend who lives there.” Through their website you can also purchase guidebooks and can even download their mobile app for easy access on the go.

  9. Meetup
  10. Meetup is a well-designed website that allows people to create and find meetup groups based on common interests and activities. Once you create an account, you can find a huge range of meetup groups in your city, either by searching or browsing.

Once you are part of the group you will get notifications of events, for instance, a cycling group will hold regular rides and post the info in their meetup group. While many of the groups are for recreational activities (hiking, yoga, singles groups), there are just as many for professional networking. For instance, there are startup groups, entrepreneur groups, and tech groups, so you can find whatever suits your interests.

No one wants to get stuck wandering around aimlessly, looking for dinner, but this guide should give you an idea of where to go out in your new city. Once you build a repertoire of familiar places the more comfortable you’ll feel in your new home, and the more enjoyable your new location will become.
